Create a new WIKI page using your initials and the name of your novel(s) as the title. Link it to your main page.
As you read your story, pay attention to the following:
Name the major character(s). Name the minor character(s). In what ways do the minor character(s) affect the main character(s)?
What decision(s) has a character made that you totally disagree with. Tell why you disagree with it.
How does this story change your thinking?
Write your ideas on your WIKI page. This should be an ongoing assignment throughout the week. As you read more chapters, add more information. Your insights can be written using bullet points, using short sentences, or writing paragraphs - your choice.
Due date: Friday, March 9
1.
Main Characters: Liesel Meminger, Hans Hubermann, Rosa Hubermann, Rudy Steiner, and the narrator.
Minor Characters: Liesel's brother and mother, Frau Heinrich, the grave digger, Rudy's father, Sister Maria, and Liesel's soccer friends.
Liesel's brother affects her because he died, and Liesel will not forget him. He is always on her mind. Liesel's mother affects her because she put Liesel up for foster care. Frau Heinrich helped Liesel find new parents. Rosa and Hans are affected by Frau because Frau gave them Liesel. The grave digger affects Liesel because Liesel took the grave digger's book. Liesel and Rudy are affected by their soccer friends because they are friends, and play soccer together. These are great examples of interaction between characters. You could have elaborated on each event to strengthen your responses.
2. I disagree with Rosa Hubermann's decisions of verbally or physically abusing Liesel. Liesel didn't do anything to her, and she refuses to treat her with dignity and respect. I also don't like the fact that Hans is not being a good father and isn't sticking up for Liesel, even though when they are reading or doing other things he seems thoughtful and caring. These things shouldn't be happening to Liesel, because she is not a bad person or deserving of any punishment.
I also don't like that Sister Maria acts like Liesel gives no effort at all, when she is probably harder than anyone else in the class. Sister Maria hasn't tried to teach anything to Liesel as well, but she still holds her up to the same academic standards as the rest of the class who have had many more years of school than she has.
3. This story changes my thinking because it gives me a different perspective on what it could have been like for people who weren't Jews still living in Germany. I can see that there were still good people living there, but have a bad name because of the cloud of Hitler and the Nazis hanging over them. I can see how kids may have had a hard time getting the real story, from their parents or from anywhere. I know I like to know what is happening, and so I probably wouldn't have liked living with the uncertainty that these kids lived with. Interesting comment...that stress and the unknown was a huge factor for any of the children living at that time. It also makes me wonder how that still affects those who survived the war; are they anxious? easily stressed? or has it made them stronger when they meet adversity?
